Abstract. Electronic translation is becoming an integral part of the educational process when learning a foreign language. Teachers are beginning to face the problem of substituting assignments designed for students to complete independently with electronic versions. In the field of scientific research, interest in the topic of digital translation is constantly growing. Empirical research is of particular interest in this regard, since they that allow to present an objective picture.
The relevance of this topic determined the problematic of its research, namely, the study of the use of electronic translation by schoolchildren. It is this category that is least represented in modern scientific literature. As a research method, an online survey was chosen, which was completed by about 70 students of Russian schools (Sondage en ligne, 2021). The open-ended answers made it possible to understand the students’ opinion on this problem.
The objectives of the research included: studying techniques of using electronic translation by schoolchildren; identifying their opinion on the quality of electronic translation; understanding the algorithm of their work with electronic translation services.
As a hypothesis of the study, it was assumed that understanding the specific practice of using electronic translation by school students will help determine the main strategies and forms of its use, focusing on its advantages and helping students understand its drawbacks.
According to the results obtained, it was found that about 80% of the respondents use electronic dictionaries (Google Translate, Yandex Translate). At the same time, only a quarter of schoolchildren turn to electronic resources immediately, while the rest try to translate words on their own or double-check the results.
In 82% of cases, preference is given to online translators because of their availability. Among the most common purposes of using online translation, one can single out the desire to learn the equivalent of a word (78%) or a phrase (66%).
60% of the respondents precise that classes on working with electronic translation would be interesting and useful. Many students desire to help the teacher with the search for material for such classes.
As a result of the research, methods of introducing online translators into the schooling process were formed.
Keywords: online translators, electronic translation, school education, methods of teaching/learning foreign languages.
